Appearances as Miss Oklahoma. The time of my life!

Hello everyone. At this very second I am sitting in my camper at Lake Murray in Ardmore, Oklahoma enjoying memorial day and giving my thanks to all of the men and women that have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. I have had some great alone time where I have the opportunity to clear my thoughts and think about my responsibilities as Miss Oklahoma. I have met some great people who have become fans of mine and are supporting myself, and my cause fully. Support is everything and I am blessed to have the support group that I do. Thank you to my Grandfather, my Opa, my father and my brother (who is also my best friend) for your services in the past and now in the present.

On March 22,2012 I had the opportunity to share my story with mental illness in front of 150 people at the NAMI walk kickoff luncheon. I got to perform a piece that has touched me and has been inspirational for myself. I had the honor of sharing this appearance with the Honorable Governor Mary Fallin (R) Oklahoma. She is an advocate for Raising Awareness for Mental Illness and it was an honor to share my story with her.

On April 16,2012 I had another great opportunity to speak at the Children's Mental Illness
Picnic at the Capitol in Oklahoma City. Again I had the opportunity to make this appearance with Governor Mary Fallin again. I spoke to a variety of ages and ethnicities and I had an amazing time. Something I will cherish forever.

On May 17,2012 I was invited to speak at the Mental Illness Convention of Oklahoma held in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I spoke in front of 750 people who have either been effected by mental illness or someone they know and love has been effected by mental illness. A number of Doctors that specialize in this fied were present and it was an honor to meet them and shake the hands of men and women that are providing the tools to get people the help they desperately need! I sang "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus and it touched many people.

On May 19,2012 the NAMI walk was held at Stars and Stripes Park in Oklahoma City. My team raised over $2,000 for the donation and I had the best team ever! We were part of a super team, which was St Anthony behavioral medicine
(which is where I was diagnosed with bi polar disorder). I had the best supporters. My mother, who has been with me every step of the way and is more than just my mom, but my ultimate best friend. I don't know what or who I would be without her love and support. My father, who has been my biggest motivator and my biggest fan. Without him, I would be completely lost in life. My brother, Jeff, who even though is at an Army Training School 2 hours away, he still came to the walk and surprised me with his support. I can't tell you how much his love and support means to me how thankful I am to have an amazing big brother like him who will do anything for his family. He is my BUBBAH! And of course the 2 loves of my life, my finance Jay and my 3 year old daughter miss Krissy. Without them, I would not be here Mental illness would have claimed my life. I thank the Lord everyday for giving me the 2 most loving and important people in my life. I am doing everything in my power to make them proud of me.

I am working on getting into the public and private schools all around Oklahoma to share my story and tell these high schoolers that there life is not over and it WILL get better. It takes time and determination but it IS possible! I am so very passionate about my platform because I have and am still going through my own personal battles but I will not give up.

Representing Oklahoma at the national level and Raising Awareness for Mental Illness is more than just a "job". It's what I live for, and it's what I feel my calling is. I have realized since I have been battling this, how many people really do suffer from these diseases. It's just like cancer or diabetes. It's LIFE THREATENING! And if untreated, it will claim lives. Mental Illnesses turn into suicides without help!!!!!

A little information about mental illness (depression, anxiety, bi polar, schizophrenia, schizo-effective, OCD etc.)
  • Did you know that worldwide there are more deaths due to suicide than accidents, homicides, and war- COMBINED.
  • Over 34,000 people die in the U.S by suicide every year.
  • Every day, nearly 100 Americans die by suicide and another 2,370 attempt suicide.
  • Early recognition and treatment of depression and other psychiatric illness is the best way to prevent suicide

I am ready to share my story to the nation!!!! I am ready to make a difference!!! RECOVERY IS REALITY!!!!!!!

Miss Oklahoma 2012

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Hi guys! Well I had my first appearance today at the Edmond Newcomers Club in Edmond, Oklahoma and talked about my experiences with mental illness. Gail Israel was there to speak about NAMI and she did a fantastic job with providing useful information to these ladies in Edmond. I had a pretty cool experience afterwards too. I went to the restroom to change for class and ran into 2 precious little girls and their eyes lit up. I decided to poke my head into the classroom that they were in to say hi to the boys and girls. Their faces lit up and was absolutely gleaming. That was the most amazing experience I have ever had. Kids always have a special place in my heart and I just pray everyday that I can continue to be a role model for not just little girls because I wear a pretty crown but to everyone. Little boys, girls, teenagers, and adults. I pray for the strength and the courage to continue what I am doing and do it to my best ability. Pictures will be uploaded soon onto my blog of today's appearance. Keep following! Its going to be a FUN ride!

Hello!

Hello! My name is Shaelynn Morefield. I am so very excited to be Miss Oklahoma United States All World Beauties 2012. I am 21 years old and currently go to Oklahoma State University where I am getting my General Education studies out of the way so I can attend the University of Oklahoma and major in Flute Performance and minor in Vocal Performance. This year with my reign, I am focusing on raising awareness for mental illness and suicide prevention. This is very dear to me for many reasons. I myself have been diagnosed with type 2 bi-polar disorder and severe anxiety. For about 2 years I was very suicidal. The only thing that was keeping me from going through with this was my daughter Kristyne who is 2 years old. I am very involved with an organization called NAMI and I am a team leader for the fundraiser and walk that we have and that is being held in March. I am also going to many different schools around Oklahoma to make speeches and appearances and talk about my experience with having a mental disorder. Not very many people know that these things go on. Maybe they do but they aren't very serious about learning what really goes on in someones head that is battling this disease. With this organization and other people to come together and share their own personal stories, we can raise awareness for these diseases and get people the help that they desperately need, but are too scared to make that next step in getting them well. I have been "stable" for about 6 months now and I have never felt better. I have gone back to school, became a better mother, and an all around fun person to be around again. I want my dreams and goals to be achieved, and I want others that have the same or similar disease that I do to feel as great as I do! I am looking forward to my reign as Miss Oklahoma United States All World Beauties and I look forward to making a difference in my community! God Bless you all and I look forward to hearing from my followers!
